Collection: Letter Cycles Curriculum

Curriculum Mission

The purpose of this curriculum is to provide a research-based framework using leveled cycles to help teach alphabet knowledge. It is intended to be flexible based on the teacher and student needs.

Why letter cycles?

Research shows that children learn the alphabet best with:

-Explicit instruction of the letter name, sound, and it’s role in reading and writing

-Repeated exposures

-Hands-on practice

-Auditory discrimination among letters

-Visual discrimination among letters

-Practice applying knowledge in a variety of ways

The traditional way of teaching one letter a week alphabetically is ineffective. It teaches letters in isolation and does not support opportunities to compare and reteach. It teaches for mastery in one week and does not revisit letters once they are taught.
